World Ocean Day 2021
On the 8th June 2021 we celebrate the 13th anniversary of World Oceans Day.
On this day we raise awareness of how to best act to protect and restore our oceans across the globe. World Ocean Day have a ‘Conservation Action Focus’, being to protect at least 30% of our blue planet for a healthy ocean and climate by 2030. This annual day of awareness presents a key opportunity for us all to learn about how we can act to support our oceans.
Some of the key issues facing our oceans are:
- Water Pollution
- Single-Use Plastics
- Overfishing
The importance of our oceans cannot be understated. With oceans coring over 70% of the planet, they are the life source supporting humanity’s sustenance and that of every other organism on Earth. The ocean produces at least 50% of the planet’s oxygen, and is home to most of the Earth’s biodiversity, being the main source of protein for more than a billion people globally. As well as being key to global economies, with 40 million people estimated to be employed by ocean-based industries by 2030.
Despite providing many benefits, oceans are being exploited and need our support. Over 90% of big fish populations are depleted and 50% of coral reefs have been destroyed. World Ocean Day provides educational resources and methods of action to tackle these issues.
The theme of World Ocean Day 2021 is “The Ocean: Life & Livelihoods”, this consisting of a declaration of intentions that launch a decade of challenges to enable the United Nation’s (UN) to fulfill Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 14 “Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources” by 2030. |
Here at Blake we are well aware of our responsibility to be sustainable in every practice.
In order to be a sustainably sound business, we at Blake have innovated a plastic-free packaging range called VITA™, meaning ‘life’ in Latin. Our VITA™ range looks to tackle two big current issues. The first is the drive to eliminate plastic, while the other is to deal with what is referred to as ‘over-packing’, reducing excess packaging waste.

“We believe that sustainability isn’t just about meeting current needs, however, but more importantly, it is about ensuring we are here for the long term and are paving the way for a bright tomorrow”.
