Funding Equipment for Yeovil Sea & Royal Marine Cadets

Funding Equipment for Yeovil Sea & Royal Marine Cadets

We believe that education is a vital part of every child’s life. It has the ability to expand horizons, develop life skills and improve the standard of living for whole communities…

This is why, through The Blake Foundation, we are dedicated to supporting a number of local and national charities by making substantial donations. Many of these charities relate directly to circumstances that have touched the lives of our staff and friends.

In February 2019, we were thrilled to support TS Mantle VC (Yeovil Sea and Royal Marine Cadets). This charity was nominated by Alun, our Quality and Compliance Manager, who is heavily involved with sea cadets himself, both at district and area level.

Our donations were used to fund a wide range of the required equipment which enabled 24 cadets to register for the Duke of Edinburgh Bronze and Silver awards!

Here Alun gives us an overview of the charity, and the impact our donations made:

“Yeovil Sea Cadets are a registered charity, and we currently offer 87 children between the ages of 10-18 the chance to develop themselves as young people mentally, physically and spiritually.
“We as a unit volunteer at many local events, helping with car parking, setting up event arenas, emptying bins, general litter picking duties, and we also usher at events in Sherborne Abbey and the Fleet Air Arm Museum.
“Cadets have fantastic opportunities to gain qualifications in all waterborne activities, Marine Engineering, Catering, Seamanship and many more subjects. There are also opportunities for travel on one of the 8 offshore vessels, whether it be under power or sail.
“This year saw 8 cadets complete the Duke of Edinburgh Bronze award: this was the first time for many years that the unit have been able to offer this. The committee invested money in ruck sacks, cookers, cooking pots, light weight hiking tents for this to happen.
“The saying “a picture tells a 1000 stories” is very true. I now have another 24 cadets registered for the DofE Bronze and Silver award, but originally only had the equipment for 8 to participate.
“With the help of Blake we were able deliver this opportunity to all 24 cadets. This was the initial reason behind me getting involved with the unit that I also went to some 32 years ago. Sadly, back in the day, opportunities like this were not available to young people.”
